about

Minneapolis MN, the A+ Spring Break Destination

Thank you for your interest in physical media and welcome to the 15th Anniversary Edition and hard copy debut of my 2008 Year Long Spring Break Mixtape. Created during the transition of rap mixtapes into a predominantly digital entity as independent music stores were being “raided” for CD-R “copies of mixtapes” and mainstream chains sold alleged “mixtapes” of wholly new songs on original productions, I envisioned releasing a collection of all of my favorite collaborations I recorded in 2008 with interspersed clips of radio appearances and live recordings. It was my tribute to the classic hip-hop mixtape format by putting my own spin on these treasured traditions made when I lived in hip-hop’s birthplace.

Recorded between January 2008 and December 2008 in a variety of conditions ranging from New York University Recording Studios to questionably legal “studio apartments,” I feel I accomplished what my favorite mixtapes always seemed to do - give a personalized snapshot of a specific moment. 2008 was a very difficult year containing some of the most challenging times of my life, but as busy as it was I always had music-making sessions with my friends from all over the hip-hop map to look forward to. 15 years later, I listen and I don’t think of the stress of death/recession/graduation/moving that surrounded it, but rather how lucky I was to have a way to channel and express those feelings alongside people I enjoyed being around. Written almost entirely in places that no longer exist and released on a website that’s no longer online, you now hold in your hands tangible proof that my friends and I worked hard on some art that I’m happy to say still sounds pretty good. On a cassette - the quintessential mixtape format!

It closes with an NPR special on New York’s Hip-Hop Subway Series from Spring 2007, which through national syndication opened a lot of doors for me and was the first indication to a lot of longtime friends and family outside of New York that I was accomplishing something. I added it as a bonus track at the end because it really exemplifies what a special, albeit overlooked, time in New York underground hip-hop that was. I’m glad it can now exist in the physical realm for boomboxes and Home Alone Talkboys.

Special thanks to Dexter Blanding for his outstanding preservation and archivist work. Special thanks to Darko the Super and the team at U Don’t Deserve This Beautiful Art for the opportunity to do a limited cassette run of Year Long Spring Break. And the most special thanks of all to my Mom for always believing in me, encouraging me to follow my dreams, instilling her kindness and zeal for appreciating every step of every journey. I love you Mom.

Dedicated to Mathew Glenn Amundsen 1986-2008
